The building opened on 23 December 1895 as the ‘New Grand Opera House and Cirque’, it was designed by the renowned theatre and circus architect Frank Matchem. It was renamed the Palace of Varieties in 1904, changing its name to the Grand Opera House in 1909. Charlie Chaplin performed there in 1908. Luciano Pavarotti made his UK debut there.
